2023-03-02

On November 7th, the 2020 International Workshop on Microwave and Microsystems was successfully held in Tianjin University. The workshop is sponsored by Tianjin University and organized by both School of Microelectronics and Tianjin Key Laboratory of Imaging and Sensing Microelectronics Technology. The workshop is held as a virtual conference online on Zoom platform.

As an important part of the construction of the talent recruitment base of the school, this workshop is held in the third consecutive year as an annual activity for international exchange in the field of integrated circuits (ICs) and microsystems. The workshop had invited eight Fellows of the IEEE for keynote talks online to share the latest development in their research, and discuss with the faculties from the school. The invited speakers include Ke Wu who is the professor of the Polytechnique Montréal, Canada, the Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering, and the Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada; Raafat Mansour who is the professor of the University of Waterloo, Canada, the Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering, and the Fellow of the Engineering Institute of Canada; Ming Yu who is the professor of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, China and Southern University of Science and Technology, Shenzhen, China, the adjunct professor from the University of Waterloo, and the Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering; Qijun Zhang who is the professor of Carleton University, Canada and Tianjin University, China, and the Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering; Madhavan Swaminathan who is the professor and the director of the Center for Co-Design of Chip, Package, System (C3PS), Georgia Tech, USA; Yeo Kiat Seng who is the professor and Associate Provost at Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD), Singapore; Maurizio Bozzi who is the professor of University of Pavia, Italy, and the elected member of MTT-S Administrative Committee for the 2017-2022 term; and Kaixue Ma who is the the awardee of the Chinese National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, and the Dean of the School of Microelectronics, Tianjin University.

The online workshop had attracted over 300 registration including the teachers and students from the School of Microelectronics and other universities, as well as the experts from industry. The opening ceremony of the talk sessions was held at 8:20 on the morning of November 7th and hosted by professor Qijun Zhang. The university Vice President professor Wenping Hu delivered the opening address via the recorded video. He welcomed the attending of the invited speakers and indicted that the School of Microelectronics has continued to strengthen the construction of “Heterogeneous Chip Microsystem +” platform based on the advantageous foundation of Tianjin IC Design Center, and focused on the technological direction of IC development in the post-Moore era, planned the scheme to develop various integrated microsystem technology. Tianjin University will continue to promote the international exchange and cooperation in the aspects of research innovation, industrial service and talent cultivation with an open attitude.

After the opening ceremony, Prof. Zhang and Prof. Ma chaired the morning and afternoon talk sessions. The talk delivered from the speakers are with the titles of “ New Development of Microwave Network Theory and Applications”, “Glass Based Heterogeneous Integration for mmWave Systems”, “Towards Battery-Free Internet of Things (IoT) Sensors: Far-Field Wireless Power Transfer and Harmonic Backscattering”, “Tunable Multi-Function Multi-Band Filters for Wireless Communication Systems”, “Neural Network Approaches to Nonlinear Microwave Device Modeling”, “Design of Voltage-controlled Oscillators for 60-GHz Wireless Communication Applications”, “Silicon-based RF / mm-wave Integrated System Based on Multi-tank Model”, “Novel Technologies for Microwave Sensors”, respectively. The interaction was also conducted online after the talks.

The discussion session was held after the talks with the research teams from Tianjin Key Laboratory of Imaging and Sensing Microelectronics Technology. The discussion was conducted based on the updates of current lab development and centered around the topics of recommendations on promoting high-quality international collaboration in the condition of the COVID-19 world pandemic, recommendations on research directions, recommendations on research team building, and recommendations on organizing multi-disciplinary research activities, to receive suggestions from the invited experts and initiate discussions. After an in-depth discussion of nearly two hours, the invited experts give valuable suggestions from their own experiences, for the short- and long-term construction of the School, and the cooperation plans in multi-level between universities.

The workshop has been organized successfully under the obstruction of international travelling caused by the COVID-19 pandemic in the form of the virtual conference via the online platform, to continue delivering the international exchange stadium for students, teachers and scholars in the field of ICs and microsystems within the university and the outside. At the same time, this success has provided a new perspective for the school to initiate international cooperation from multiple aspects to strengthen the construction of the talent recruitment base.
